Melody, alongside the next doll, was used to figure out the direction we wanted for the set -- and the project in general. We wanted to give this line something that set it apart, something that also played into the "dress up" aspect of playing with dolls; something like... a mask. You would think that having that decided would make the process a lot easier, but it still took a while to figure out how everything else would work. It really wasn't until we stopped focusing on giving her clothing that things started to mesh properly. We saw that with some painted patterns on the body, a head piece, and an accessory or two, we could show off the joints of the doll; while also giving her whatever flavour the theme required. With that, all that was left to do was figure out the details of the design and to make her feel as lightweight as possible. We really wanted it to feel like she being carried by the wind, much like how it feels when you have your head in the clouds.

Rhythm was a very tough nut to crack. As mentioned previously, she was used -- in unison with Melody -- to figure out what this project was going to be; but she was also tasked with adding range to the collection.Melody fits nicely into the more "traditional" view of music and, as such, we wanted Rhythm to represent the complete opposite. We needed her to be more "modern".At first, everything we tried felt too aggressive -- which is the last thing we want for these designs, or, at least, for this series -- and was too far removed from what we had already established. So, we pivoted. We were only considering music that was very loud and sharp; there was something about the strong bass they had that called to us, but that kind of music isn't the only place you can find that in.Once we realised that, we decided to focus on embodying the beat itself. The vibrations you feel, the ripples it can create, and the zen like trance it can put you in.

This one was interesting. From the start we were adamant on using a specific mask -- the moretta mask. Something about it just... felt right. The mask demanded dark tones to match. Even if we tried doing some lighter versions, the only places white could be introduced were those that accentuated how dark everything else was. Everything else looked wrong.Silence didn't feel like a doll that would have a lot of moving parts or stood out from the start. We wanted her to be simple, but capable of capturing your full attention. Well, what keeps a human's attention better than the eyes of another? With that focal point in play, we got to work on figuring out how to best accompany it.While thinking, the only thing that kept going through our heads were the words: A cold gazed, "queen of the night" -esque, void that stares back. That, eventually, took us to the night sky and the shine of freshly fallen snow -- and that's when the solution came to us. We needed to add glitter.
- THE DOLL -
"THE DOLL" is a figurine concept project that consists on creating a collection of designs based around a central theme. Our model, Dolly, pictured on the right, can disappear into any role you give her, no matter how difficult -- and so can we, for that matter!
Our designs often combine the allure of fantasy with the punchiness of fashion, resulting in an otherworldly but cozy feeling.
